Derailleur Adjustment Guide for Electric Mountain Bike

Himiway derailleur
Adjusting the gears of the E-bike is essential when it comes to maintaining effective and consistent shifting performance. It also contributes to avoiding issues with the drivetrain. So, an essential part there plays the proper derailleur adjustment. It is a fundamental and basic part that helps proper turning of the gears. It guides the chain from cog to cog on the cassette and provides a safe and pleasant ride.

What makes the derailleur important is that when the rider uses it, it allows the shifts to move the chain from one shift to the other. This change of shifts is important for different terrain as well as different types of e-bike riding. For example, one gear is suggested for the straight road, while the other when there is an uphill. But, when the chain or the gears are dirty or sticky, it can affect the overall performance of the E-bike, and more importantly, the ability to shift the gears properly. That is why it is recommended to practice a regular derailleur adjustment for the E-bike chain when it is dislodged from the gears. Additionally, if the bike gears noise or imprecise when shifting gears, you should look at the derailleur.

As mentioned above, the bike derailleur adjustment is needed to align the rear derailleur with the individual cogs and set the shifting limits. This ensures smooth and accurate shifting. Four different things are involved in the calibration of the bike derailleur adjustment. Those are the derailleur alignment, cable tension, limit screws, and B-tension.

To make the most out of the process, this guide will help you out through all the steps.

1. Get the E-bike ready

The first thing in the process of proper bike derailleur adjustment is to prepare the E-bike. What does it mean? Well, start with turning the bike off. You cannot work on it if it is turned on. Next comes the removal of the battery. The battery needs to be removed for safety reasons. The next step in the preparation of the bike is to clean the bike a bit. Star with wiping the gears and the chain of dirt, stains, oil, mud. You will need a Philips screwdriver for the process. Additionally, an e-bike frame is also needed so that you can set the e-bike. Now, when the bike is prepared, you can move on to the next steps.

2. Inspect the derailleur

The second step is checking the derailleur. First, take a look at the derailleur. It is located at the rear wheel. What you are looking for is to see if it lines up directly under the gear set by the shift lever. When in 1st  gear, the chain should be on the largest gear. In the 7th  gear, the chain should be on the smallest gear. If the derailleur or the derailleur hanger is bent, and it does not hang directly under specific gear, then, the E-bike must be taken to a professional service. This means that you will need to look for a certified and reputable bike merchant that specializes in repairs.

3. Adjust the derailleur

The adjustment and the steps for the derailleur depend on different situations.

  1. If the chain falls, that might be because the derailleur might be too close or too far from the gears. What you will need to do is to find and adjust the derailleur limit screw. If the chain happens to come off the smallest cog, then, you should rotate the crank forward and shift it to the 7th Then, tight the upper setscrew, in a clockwise direction using a Philips screwdriver.do this until the chain on the upper pinch roller becomes aligned directly below the smallest cog. If the chain comes off the largest gear, then rotate the crank forward. Shift it in the 1st gear with a Philips screwdriver. This will turn the lower limit screw clockwise to make it tighter. It will also move the derailleur down to the flywheel. Turn until the chain on the upper wheel is aligned directly under the bull gear. To test the alignment, shift between gears.
  1. If there is a noise during shifting gears, it can mean that the cable tension might be too tight. To fix that, turn the crank forward into 7th This will transfer the chain into smaller gear and loosen the barrel adjuster on the derailleur. Turn the barrel adjuster 1/2 a full turn clockwise. Test to see if the shifting of gears runs smoothly.
  1. If the chain climbs the gears too slow, it might mean that the derailleur might be too loose. You will need to crank forward and shift into the 7th Tight the barrel to adjust the derailleur and set it. Again, test it to see if it runs smoothly.

With these steps, you will manage to effectively adjust the bike derailleur. Depending on the situation and other indicators that might appear on your E-bike, you can easily and safely adjust the derailleur. Having a fully functional derailleur will not only preserve the life of the E-bike but will also provide you with a safer, smoother, and more enjoyable ride. It needs to be taken care of and maintained regularly, which will make your E-bike last longer. The process is very simple, and through this guide, you will easily succeed in fixing the problem yourself. By doing this, you will instantly see how the gears shift more smoothly, there is no bad noise and the ride is as normal as possible. And you need nothing more than a screwdriver to do this yourself. However, if there is a problem that you cannot fix, be sure to ask for skilled and professional help.
