E-bikes are currently one of the most popular and sought-after bikes in the world. From the first moment they appeared, the E-bikes demand is constantly rising. The so-called regular bikes with the motor are attracting the interest of people of different age groups, particularly those between 30 to 50. This is mainly because they use the e-bike and the E-bike speed to commute back and to the workplace.
The market today offers all different kinds of bikes, and with that, E-bikes too. There are different categories that make them unique in the ride and the properties they provide. They carry different motors, battery capacities, have different designs, and cater to different riding ranges. Most commonly, the E-bikes reach a certain speed, which makes them suitable for the regular city drive as well as perfect for the exploration trails. But what happens for those who still want a version of the e-bike, but one that will go faster?
There are many questions about this type of e-bike, which is also known as a speed bike. But, although the names might sound similar, these two bikes are actually pretty different. They also require a different approach, license, and different take on the entire riding experience. A regular e-bike is defined as an electric bike that has auxiliary pedals. Its motor speed can reach up to 25 km/h. The high-speed e-bike, on the other hand, also has auxiliary pedals, but its speed can reach 45 km/h. That is why it is also known as a high-speed E-bike. Although these are the main differences that separate the e-bike from the speed-bike, there are some other things that make the distinction more evident.
Driving License
In most countries, an e-bike, with an assisted pedaling motor that reaches up to 25 km/h is considered a classic bicycle. As such, it means that it does not require a driving license to operate. It also does not need to have a license plate. Although the helmet is not required, it is definitely suggested, for personal safety. The classic e-bike must always ride on the bike path and does not need special insurance. These are some general rules, and some are dependent on specific countries. The general trends and the perception is pretty much the same. However, there is an initiative and soon many countries will implement particular laws that will refer to whether you need to follow certain regulations or not.
When it comes to high-speed bikes, also known as speed pedelecs, they are a bit different. Starting with the property that they provide pedaling motor speed that can reach ut to 45 km/h, the riders of such bikes must register their bike. It should be done with the vehicle registration authority, the same as it is done for a car. After fulfilling that registration, the owner of the speed pedelec will get a small number plate, which needs to be installed on the e-bike. It also requires a driving license, which needs to be for the class of mopeds or cars. Getting the license itself means that the rider is at least 16 years old. They must wear a helmet, which is mandatory.
Insurance
A good thing about e-bikes is the insurance. This insurance is referred to as liability insurance. It does not make a difference between whether it is a standard E-bike or a high-speed e-bike – purchasing liability insurance is not needed. However, it certainly is recommended, just to be safe. Liability insurance is the type of document that covers the damage that you would cause to another rider, in case an accident happens.
However, the situation is different for the E-bikes that do not require pedals. In that case, you will always need liability insurance coverage.
Riding roads
Another difference worth mentioning is the riding road. Where can you ride the speed e-bike? Can it be in the same lines as for the regular E-bikes? The speed E-bikes are intended to be ridden on a public road, where the speed is limited to 50 km/h, for the entire traffic. Additionally, it can be ridden both on public roads and bike paths too. If the speed limit on a certain road is higher, then, the speed E-bike must be ridden on the determined bike lanes.
When it comes to one-lane streets, the E-bike should only be ridden with the pedaling system. This also applies to traditional bikes, no matter whether they are with or without motor-assisted pedaling.
Always follow the signs on the road. Although there are more differences between these two types of E-bikes, these three are the most dominating and important ones to mention. Each type of E-bike is considered a part of the traffic, and as such, it must respect the follow the rules on the road, as well as signs. Although not every state has clear rules that especially refer to the particular types of e-bikes, they soon will be imposed. That means that not complying with the rules and the regulations under that law might subject you to a fee or penalty. That is why it is important to always check the rules referring to E-bikes.
When it comes to choosing whether to go with the regular E-bike or speed pedelec, the decision is entirely up to you. Your particular lifestyle needs and the commute that you do daily will tell you whether the regular speed E-bike is enough or you need an upgrade. However, both types of E-bikes are great with the properties they have and they wonderfully serve their purpose as part of the traffic and redefinition of your lifestyle.
