  • Are 72V E-Bikes Street Legal?

The 72V e-bike market has grown rapidly in 2026. While conventional electric bicycles commonly use 36V, 48V, or 52V systems, 72V platforms are aimed at riders who want substantially more acceleration, climbing power, battery capacity, and high-speed performance.

Many of today's 72V machines blur the line between an e-bike, electric moped, and lightweight electric motorcycle. Some produce several thousand watts of power and can exceed 50 mph when operated in unrestricted modes. That makes them exciting for off-road riding and private-property use, but it also means buyers need to pay close attention to local laws.

For riders who don't actually need motorcycle-like performance, we've also included a practical 48V alternative—the Himiway D5 2.0 20"—for everyday riding, comfort, and accessibility.

1. Aniioki A9 Pro Max GT — Best 72V E-Bike for Extreme Range

The Aniioki A9 Pro Max GT is one of the most extreme 72V bikes available in 2026. Its defining feature is the enormous 72V 70Ah battery, providing approximately 5,040Wh of energy.

It uses dual motors rated at 3,000W each, with the manufacturer listing 3,500W peak per motor. Aniioki lists unrestricted speeds of roughly 54–60 mph, along with up to 270Nm of combined maximum torque.

The huge battery also makes the A9 particularly interesting for riders who prioritize range. However, at around 188 lb with the 70Ah battery, this is far removed from a lightweight bicycle.

Best for: Riders prioritizing enormous battery capacity, dual-motor acceleration, and long-distance high-power riding.

2. WIRED Predator — Best Dual-Motor 72V E-Bike

The WIRED Predator combines a 72V electrical architecture with all-wheel drive and extremely high motor output.

Its front and rear motors provide a claimed 8,000W combined peak output and approximately 330Nm of combined torque. The dual-battery configuration combines a 72V 20Ah front battery with a 72V 15Ah rear battery for roughly 2,520Wh of total energy.

WIRED lists a top speed exceeding 55 mph in unrestricted mode. Importantly, the manufacturer says the Predator ships configured as Class 2 with a 20 mph limit and can also be configured for Class 1 or Class 3 operation. Unrestricted operation may not be legal on public roads or bicycle infrastructure.

Best for: Experienced riders looking for AWD traction and exceptionally strong acceleration.

3. HappyRun G100 Pro — Best Value 72V E-Bike

For riders who want serious 72V performance without moving into the highest price tier, the HappyRun G100 Pro presents an interesting combination.

It uses a 72V 33Ah battery, 6,000W peak motor output, hydraulic brakes, and 20 x 4-inch road-oriented tires. HappyRun claims speeds up to 50 mph, a maximum range of 78 miles, and a 400-lb load capacity.

Its cafe-racer-inspired design also distinguishes it from conventional fat-tire electric bicycles.

Best for: Riders seeking a balance between price, battery capacity, speed, and road-oriented performance.

4. NIU XQi3 — Best Smart 72V Electric Bike

The NIU XQi3 takes a much more technology-focused approach to high-performance electric riding.

Its removable 72V 32Ah battery uses 21700 lithium-ion cells and provides 2,304Wh of capacity. The bike also offers Bluetooth connectivity, route tracking, smart locking, OTA updates, riding statistics, and configurable riding modes.

The current U.S. specification distinguishes between Street and Wild configurations. NIU lists the Wild version at up to 57 mph and 11,200W maximum power, while the Street configuration has different performance limits.

With 220mm front and 203mm rear disc brakes plus off-road tires, the XQi3 is clearly closer to an electric dirt bike than a traditional pedal bicycle.

Best for: Tech-focused riders who want connected features combined with serious off-road performance.

5. E-Ride Pro SS — Best 72V Electric Dirt Bike Alternative

The E-Ride Pro SS family has become a recognizable option among riders moving from conventional e-bikes toward lightweight electric dirt bikes.

Earlier Pro SS documentation specifies a 72V electrical system, 72V 30Ah battery, 8,000W peak output, and speeds around 50 mph, illustrating just how far this category sits above conventional Class 1–3 electric bicycles.

Newer E-Ride Pro generations push performance substantially further, so buyers should check the specifications for the exact model year and version rather than assuming every Pro SS has identical hardware.

Best for: Riders interested primarily in trails, dirt-bike-style handling, and recreational off-road performance.

6. Rawrr Mantis X Pro — Best Lightweight High-Performance 72V Platform

The Rawrr Mantis X Pro is another model that moves decisively into electric dirt-bike territory.

Rawrr currently lists the Mantis X Pro with a 72V 2,520Wh battery platform and a claimed top speed of up to 65 mph. The manufacturer also provides app-based speed limiting, a removable battery, hydraulic disc brakes, and an aluminum chassis.

Its combination of relatively compact dimensions and very high power makes it better suited to experienced riders than people shopping for a conventional commuter bicycle.

Best for: Riders who want an agile, high-output electric dirt-bike platform.

7. Talaria Sting — Best for Aggressive Trail Riding

The Talaria Sting family is popular with riders looking for something between a mountain bike and a full-size dirt bike.

High-voltage Sting variants emphasize strong acceleration, substantial suspension travel, motorcycle-style tires, and trail-focused geometry. The newer 72V versions provide a significant performance step beyond earlier 60V platforms.

Unlike a conventional mid drive ebike, however, these machines use motorcycle-style powertrains and should not be treated as ordinary Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3 bicycles simply because they are sometimes marketed within the broader e-bike category.

Best for: Technical trails, recreational off-road riding, and riders moving toward electric moto platforms.

8. WIRED Viper — Best High-Power Step-Through 72V E-Bike

High-performance 72V bikes are often large step-over machines, but the WIRED Viper takes a different approach.

It combines a compact 20-inch step-through frame with dual motors producing up to 8,000W combined peak output. WIRED lists up to 430Nm of combined torque and speeds exceeding 50 mph. Its batteries are listed as UL 2271 compliant.

That makes the Viper particularly unusual: it provides the easier mounting characteristics associated with step-through bikes while retaining the extreme performance expected from the 72V category.

Best for: Riders who specifically want a step-through frame without giving up high-voltage performance.

9. WIRED Warrior — Best All-Around 72V Performance Bike

The WIRED Warrior sits below the company's dual-motor Predator in outright power but offers a more straightforward high-performance configuration.

Its 72V system delivers up to 5,000W peak power and 180Nm of torque, along with full suspension, dual batteries, and selectable torque- or cadence-based pedal assistance.

For riders who don't need an 8,000W AWD setup, the Warrior provides a middle ground between mainstream fat-tire bikes and extreme dual-motor machines.

Best for: Riders seeking strong 72V performance without jumping directly to an AWD flagship.

10. WIRED Scout — Best 72V Step-Through for Everyday Comfort

The WIRED Scout combines the company's 72V platform with a more accessible step-through frame.

Its system provides 5,000W peak power and 180Nm of torque, plus dual suspension, dual batteries, and selectable torque/cadence pedal assistance.

For riders who find tall high-performance frames difficult to mount, this design can make the 72V category more approachable.

Best for: Riders looking for 72V power in an easier-to-mount frame.

A More Practical Alternative: Himiway D5 2.0 20"

Not every rider searching for a 72V e-bike actually needs 50+ mph performance.

For commuting, recreational riding, beach paths, camping trips, and everyday transportation, a conventional electric bicycle can often be easier to ride, transport, maintain, and use legally.

That's where the Himiway D5 2.0 20" becomes an interesting alternative.

Himiway D5 2.0 20" full suspension fat tire electric bike in Midnight Blue, left side view.

Unlike the extreme machines above, the D5 2.0 20" uses a 48V 15Ah battery and 750W motor producing up to 90Nm of torque. Its compact 20-inch format, fat tires, and full suspension emphasize stability and comfort rather than motorcycle-like speed.

The D5 2.0 20" also supports Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 configurations, making it much closer to what most shoppers expect from an everyday e-bike.

It isn't a mid drive ebike—the D5 2.0 uses a rear hub motor—but its 90Nm motor and switchable torque/cadence sensing provide strong assistance while preserving straightforward operation.

Its accessible geometry is another advantage for shorter riders, older riders, and anyone who frequently stops and starts. For shoppers researching the best step through electric bike, the D5 2.0 20" deserves consideration because it combines a compact frame with full suspension, fat tires, a 440-lb payload rating, and up to 70 miles of pedal-assist range.

Instead of maximizing voltage and top speed, Himiway's approach prioritizes comfort, accessibility, range, and everyday usability.

Best for: Seniors, shorter riders, RV travelers, recreational riders, commuters, and anyone who wants an approachable fat-tire e-bike rather than an electric motorcycle.

72V vs. 48V E-Bikes: Do You Really Need 72V?

Battery voltage alone doesn't determine whether an electric bike is good. It mainly affects how the electrical system can deliver power.

A 72V system is particularly useful for very high-output motors because higher voltage can deliver the same electrical power with less current:

Power (W) = Voltage (V) × Current (A)

For example:

72V × 50A = 3,600W

By comparison:

48V × 20A = 960W

This is one reason 72V systems are common on high-performance electric motorcycles and e-motos.

But more voltage isn't automatically better. For an everyday rider traveling at normal bicycle speeds, a well-designed 48V system can provide plenty of hill-climbing ability and range while generally keeping the bike lighter and easier to manage.

What to Look for When Buying a 72V E-Bike

Before buying, consider more than the headline motor wattage. Battery capacity should be compared in watt-hours rather than voltage alone: Wh = V × Ah. A 72V 20Ah battery, for example, stores about 1,440Wh, while a 72V 40Ah pack stores about 2,880Wh.

Also pay close attention to brakes, tires, suspension, total bike weight, battery certification, replacement battery availability, charging equipment, and whether the manufacturer provides parts and technical support.

Most importantly, determine where you can legally ride the bike. A machine capable of 50 or 60 mph under motor power should not automatically be assumed to qualify legally as a bicycle.

Are 72V E-Bikes Street Legal?

This is the biggest issue surrounding high-power 72V bikes.

In the United States, many state e-bike frameworks recognize Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 electric bicycles with specific motor, throttle, and assisted-speed limits. A machine producing several thousand watts and providing motor assistance at 40–60 mph can fall outside those definitions.

Some manufacturers therefore ship high-performance models with restricted street modes and provide higher-performance settings intended for private property or off-road use. For example, WIRED states that the Predator ships in a 20 mph Class 2 configuration, while its 55+ mph unrestricted setting may be limited to private-property use depending on local law.

Always check your state and local rules before enabling unrestricted modes or riding a high-powered model on public streets, bike lanes, sidewalks, or multi-use trails.
