However, battery upgrades on eMTBs are rarely as simple as choosing a larger capacity. In many cases, you cannot directly replace a frame-integrated 625Wh battery with an 800Wh battery because the larger pack may have different dimensions, mounting hardware, connectors, electronics, or software requirements.

Whether an upgrade is possible ultimately depends on your bike's frame and electrical system.

Why an 800Wh Battery May Not Fit

Battery capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh). To increase capacity substantially, manufacturers generally need additional cells, higher-capacity cells, or a different battery architecture.

As a result, an 800Wh battery may be:

Longer
Wider or thicker
Heavier
Built with a differently shaped housing

This is particularly important with modern eMTBs because their batteries are often integrated into the downtube.

A frame designed around a particular 625Wh battery may simply lack enough internal space for a larger 800Wh pack.

2. Battery Mount and Cradle Compatibility

Even when two batteries look similar, their mounting systems may be different.

Manufacturers design the battery rail, locking mechanism, electrical contacts, and retention system to work together. A larger battery could have different mounting points or connector locations.

Before considering an upgrade, compare:

Locking mechanisms

Removal direction and clearance

Never force a battery into a frame or modify the battery casing to make it fit. A battery needs to be securely mounted and electrically compatible with your E-bike.

3. Voltage Must Be Compatible

Capacity isn't the only specification that matters.

Suppose your original battery is:

A higher-capacity battery could achieve approximately 800Wh through a higher amp-hour rating while maintaining the same nominal voltage.

Modern eMTBs are increasingly integrated electronic systems rather than simple combinations of a motor and battery.

The Battery Management System communicates important information about battery condition, temperature, voltage, charging, and remaining capacity.

Some proprietary ecosystems may also require approved batteries or specific firmware.

Systems from manufacturers such as Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha, and other major e-bike drive-system suppliers can have specific battery compatibility requirements.

Even if a third-party 800Wh battery could physically fit, the bike might not recognize it or operate correctly.

Can a 625Wh-to-800Wh Upgrade Ever Work?

Yes. There are situations where an upgrade is possible.

The key is whether the manufacturer designed the bike and drive system to accept both battery capacities.

For example, a manufacturer may use the same downtube design across several versions of an eMTB while offering different battery options. If the mounting system, dimensions, voltage, connectors, BMS communication, and firmware are compatible, moving to a larger battery may be possible.

The important distinction is this:

Higher capacity doesn't automatically mean incompatible.

You need to check the compatibility of the specific 625Wh and 800Wh battery models, rather than comparing their capacities alone.

What About External eMTB Batteries?

External batteries can sometimes be easier to replace because they aren't restricted by the internal dimensions of the downtube.

However, that doesn't mean any larger battery will work.

The replacement still needs the correct:

Voltage
Mounting system
Connector
BMS
Controller compatibility
Charging requirements

For safety and reliability, use batteries explicitly approved for your particular e-bike or drive system.

Consider a Range Extender Instead

If an 800Wh battery doesn't fit your eMTB, a range extender may be a better solution.

A range extender is a smaller secondary battery, often mounted externally. Compatible systems can combine the main battery and range extender to increase total available energy.

For example, instead of replacing a 625Wh battery with an 800Wh pack, a compatible auxiliary battery could supplement the existing battery.

This approach has several advantages:

No need to modify the downtube
Keeps the original battery system
Adds capacity only when needed
Can be useful for long trail rides
May be lighter than carrying the largest possible main battery every day

However, range extenders are not universal. Only use one specifically supported by your bike or motor system.

Is an 800Wh Battery Worth It?

If your eMTB officially supports an 800Wh battery, the additional capacity can be valuable for riders who regularly tackle long routes, steep climbs, or high-assistance riding.

An 800Wh battery contains about 28% more nominal energy than a 625Wh battery:

(800 - 625) ÷ 625 × 100 = 28%

That doesn't guarantee exactly 28% more riding distance because real-world range also depends on terrain, rider weight, tire pressure, temperature, speed, assistance level, elevation gain, and riding style.

The trade-off is additional weight and potentially a higher replacement cost.
