A broken, missing, or water-damaged display does not always mean your electric bike is unusable. On some e-bikes, the display is mainly a user interface and power switch; the motor controller can still operate without it. On others, the display or handlebar control is an essential part of the electronics, and removing it prevents motor assistance completely.
The safest and most reliable approach is to identify your controller and check whether the manufacturer provides a display-bypass plug or supports display-free operation. I would use a purpose-made bypass connector before attempting any wiring modification.
Here is what actually works, starting with the methods I recommend most.
1. First Check Whether Your E-Bike Actually Needs the Display
Before bypassing anything, turn the bike off and determine what type of system you have.
There are roughly three possibilities:

This distinction matters because an e-bike display can perform several different jobs. It may simply show speed and battery information, or it may also contain the power button and communicate electronically with the motor controller.
Do not assume that two identical-looking five-pin connectors have identical wiring.
2. Use a Manufacturer-Compatible Display Bypass Plug
For a compatible generic or conversion-kit e-bike, a purpose-made display bypass plug is usually the best temporary solution.
Some controllers are specifically designed to operate this way. For example, CYC documents display-free operation on some of its controllers using a bypass plug between the appropriate B+ and Key-In connections. CYC also warns that the exposed connector needs to remain protected from water and debris.
The procedure is generally:
- Turn the e-bike completely off.
- Remove or disconnect the battery if the manufacturer recommends it.
- Disconnect the damaged display.
- Connect the correct bypass plug made for that controller and wiring harness.
- Reconnect the battery.
- Turn on the battery if it has its own switch.
- Lift the drive wheel off the ground and carefully test the system before riding.
Depending on the controller, you may get throttle operation, pedal assist, or only a fixed/default assistance setting.
This is much safer than experimenting with bare wires because the correct connector already bridges the connections intended by the controller manufacturer.

3. Generic KT and Similar Controllers
Many inexpensive hub-motor conversion kits use KT-style or similar controllers. On some of these systems, the display effectively tells the controller to wake up.
You will frequently see online instructions recommending that the battery-power and controller "lock" or ignition connections be bridged. However, do not rely on wire colors alone.
Even among five-wire displays, connector pinouts and controller behavior can differ. Community reports show that a bypass that works on one KT-type controller may not work correctly on another. There are even reports of controllers being damaged after users followed seemingly compatible jumper instructions.
Therefore, I would use the following order:
Best: Obtain the correct bypass plug from the controller or kit supplier.
Second best: Find the exact wiring diagram for the controller model and connector.
Last resort: Have an e-bike technician verify the connector with a multimeter and install a suitable switch or jumper.
I would not simply connect red to blue, black to yellow, or any other wires based on a generic internet diagram. The cost of a replacement display is usually much lower than the cost of a damaged controller.
4. Using a Bafang BBS02 or BBSHD Without the Display
Bafang BBS-series conversion motors are a common situation where riders want temporary display-free operation.
A practical method used for BBS02/BBSHD troubleshooting is a compatible Bafang programming cable or purpose-built display bypass connector. Bafang troubleshooting documentation from specialist sources describes the programming cable as an easy way of bypassing the display for diagnosis.
The important point is that you should use a cable known to be compatible with your exact Bafang motor generation.
After connecting it, test the bike with the drive wheel raised before riding normally. Depending on controller configuration, throttle and/or pedal assistance may remain available at a default setting.
I would treat this primarily as an emergency or troubleshooting solution, rather than assuming every Bafang motor can permanently operate this way.
5. Bosch E-Bikes: The Screen May Not Be the Actual Controller
Bosch systems need to be treated differently from generic conversion kits.
For example, Bosch's Smart System can use components such as the LED Remote or System Controller alongside displays such as Kiox 300/Kiox 500. In this architecture, the removable screen is not necessarily the component responsible for basic system operation.
Therefore, if a Kiox display is missing or damaged but the bike still has its System Controller or compatible remote, the situation is completely different from removing the controls from a generic hub-motor e-bike.
Do not try to jump Bosch connector pins.
If the Bosch control component itself has failed, I would have a Bosch eBike dealer diagnose it rather than experimenting with the wiring harness.
6. Shimano STEPS Can Also Have Display-Free Configurations
It is also inaccurate to assume that every Shimano system needs a conventional LCD screen.
Shimano has produced configurations that use control units and LED indicators rather than a normal cycle computer. For example, Shimano documentation describes assist-mode operation using LED indicators, including OFF and different assistance levels.
So if your Shimano screen fails, first identify the exact STEPS components installed on the bike.
Do not try a generic display jumper. Shimano's documentation also advises checking connectors and contacting the place of purchase when the system cannot identify a connected component.
What If the Display Suddenly Stops Working?
If your goal is simply to get home because the display died, I would troubleshoot the display before bypassing it.
Turn the bike off and check:
- Battery charge and battery power switch
- Display connector
- Main wiring harness connectors
- Bent or pushed-back connector pins
- Moisture inside connectors
- Loose battery contacts
- Damaged display cable
- Controller wiring
Always switch the system off before disconnecting electrical connectors. On systems with a removable battery, removing it before unplugging or reconnecting components is a sensible precaution when the manufacturer's procedure allows it.
A blank screen does not automatically mean the display itself has failed. A disconnected main harness or controller power problem can produce exactly the same symptom.
What You Lose When Riding Without a Display
Even when the motor operates normally, riding without the screen has significant limitations.
You may lose:
Battery information. You won't know the exact remaining charge unless the battery has its own LED gauge.
Speed information. Unless you use a separate bike computer or phone GPS, you won't have a speedometer.
PAS adjustment. Some controllers start at one fixed/default assistance level.
Error codes. Controller, motor, brake-sensor, communication, and battery faults normally displayed on the screen become much harder to diagnose.
Trip information. Odometer, trip distance, average speed and range estimates may disappear.
Settings. Depending on the bike, you may lose access to wheel-size, lighting, assistance and other configuration menus.
For a short emergency ride, those limitations may be acceptable. For everyday use, I would replace the display or control unit.
Don't Leave a Permanently Bypassed Controller Powered On
This is easy to overlook.
On some controllers, the display normally acts as the system's ON/OFF switch. A bypass connector can effectively leave that switch permanently "on."
CYC, for example, specifically notes that some bypassed configurations remain powered until the bypass plug is removed or the battery is disconnected.
That means parking the bike with the bypass still connected can cause unnecessary standby battery drain.
If your controller behaves this way, disconnect the battery or remove the bypass according to the manufacturer's instructions when you finish riding.
Can I Just Cut and Connect the Display Wires?
I don't recommend it.
The commonly repeated advice to "connect the red and blue wires" comes from certain generic controller designs. It is not a universal e-bike standard.
A display connector can contain battery voltage, low-voltage power, ground and communication lines. Connecting the wrong pins can damage the display, controller, wiring harness, or other electronics.
If you don't have the exact controller pinout, use a compatible bypass connector or replace the display instead.
Can I Ride an E-Bike With a Completely Dead Display?
Sometimes.
If the display is only an interface and your controller has another way to switch on, the bike may operate normally.
If the display also acts as the controller's power switch, the bike normally won't provide assistance until an approved bypass or alternative control is installed.
If the system requires electronic communication with the display or another control unit, a simple jumper will not solve the problem.
And remember: you can still pedal most conventional e-bikes with the electrical system switched off, although a heavy fat-tire or mid-drive e-bike can be noticeably harder to pedal without assistance.
