An eBike is harder to secure than a regular bicycle. It is more expensive, easier for a thief to resell, and often has valuable removable parts such as the battery and display.
When I lock my eBike, I don't rely on a single lock or simply look for the nearest bike rack. My goal is to make the bike difficult, noisy, time-consuming, and risky to steal.
No locking method can guarantee that an eBike won't be stolen, but a good combination of locks, location, component security, and tracking can significantly reduce the risk.
The Best Way I Lock an eBike
For everyday use, I follow one basic rule:
I lock the frame to a solid, immovable object with a high-quality U-lock or chain, then use a second lock to secure the other wheel or another part of the frame.
A typical setup looks like this:
- Find a secure bike rack or other fixed object.
- Position the eBike as close to the rack as possible.
- Lock the frame and rear wheel to the rack with my strongest lock.
- Secure the front wheel with a second lock.
- Remove or secure valuable accessories.
- Check that neither the bike nor the rack can be easily lifted, cut, or disassembled.
The important point is that I never lock only a wheel. A thief can remove the wheel and take the rest of the eBike.
Which Type of Lock Should I Use?
Not all bike locks provide the same level of protection.

For an expensive eBike, I don't use a thin cable lock as my primary security device. I treat cable locks mainly as secondary protection for a wheel, helmet, saddle, or accessory.
Look for Independent Lock Ratings
Instead of trusting words such as "heavy duty" on the packaging, I prefer locks that have been independently security-rated.
For example, Sold Secure rates bicycle locks at Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Diamond levels. For a higher-value eBike, I would generally look toward the stronger end of the rating system.
There are also locks specifically designed to provide greater resistance to angle-grinder attacks. These tend to be heavier and more expensive, but they can make sense when regularly parking a valuable eBike in a high-theft area.
I Use Two Different Locks in Higher-Risk Areas
If I'm leaving an eBike outside for more than a few minutes, particularly in a city center or near a transit station, I prefer two locks.
Ideally, I use two different types, such as:
U-lock + heavy chain
This matters because different locks can require different tools and techniques to defeat. A thief prepared for one type of lock may have more difficulty with the second.
I also position the locks so there is as little empty space inside them as possible. This makes it harder to insert tools and gain leverage.
What Should I Lock My eBike To?
A strong lock isn't very useful if the object I'm attaching it to is weak.
I look for:
- Properly installed bicycle racks
- Thick steel posts
- Secure ground anchors
- Other structures firmly attached to concrete
Before walking away, I physically check the object.
A poorly installed bike rack can sometimes be unbolted. A thin signpost can be cut. A short pole may allow a thief to simply lift the locked bike over the top.
I also avoid locking to trees, railings, accessibility infrastructure, or private property where bicycle parking isn't permitted.
Where I Park Matters Almost as Much as the Lock
I prefer a location that is:
busy, visible, well-lit, and difficult for someone to work on a lock unnoticed.
If possible, I park near:
- Building entrances
- Staffed businesses
- Active pedestrian areas
- Dedicated secure bicycle parking
- Locations covered by surveillance cameras
I avoid isolated alleys, hidden corners, and places where a thief could spend several uninterrupted minutes cutting a lock.
There is one important exception: visibility isn't enough by itself. A busy sidewalk does not automatically make a bike secure. People may simply ignore someone working on a bicycle.
That's why I combine a good location with strong physical security.
Should I Remove the eBike Battery When Parking?
If the battery is easily removable and I'm leaving the bike for a long period, I usually take it with me.
An eBike battery can be one of the most expensive individual components on the bicycle.
Removing it provides two benefits:
- The battery itself can't easily be stolen.
- The eBike becomes less attractive and less useful to a thief.
If carrying the battery isn't practical, I make sure it is properly locked into the frame using the manufacturer's battery lock.
However, I don't treat the built-in battery lock as a substitute for securing the entire bicycle.
Don't Forget the Display, Saddle, and Wheels
Sometimes the entire eBike isn't stolen—valuable components are.
I pay particular attention to:
Removable Displays
If my display can be removed without tools, I take it with me.
Quick-Release Wheels
Quick-release wheels are convenient for riders and thieves. If the bike has them, I secure both wheels or consider replacing the quick-release hardware with locking skewers or security axles.
Saddle and Seatpost
A quick-release seat clamp can make an expensive saddle or suspension seatpost easy to steal. Security bolts or a small secondary lock can help.
Bags and Accessories
Lights, phone holders, panniers, tools, cameras, and other removable accessories shouldn't be left on the bike unnecessarily.

I Don't Rely on the eBike's Electronic Lock
Some modern eBikes can disable motor assistance through an app, PIN, display, or electronic locking system.
That's useful, but I consider it an additional security layer—not a physical lock.
An electronically disabled eBike can still be:
- Lifted into a vehicle
- Carried away
- Stripped for parts
- Physically damaged while someone attempts to steal it
I always use a physical lock even when electronic immobilization is available.
Is a GPS Tracker Worth Installing?
For a valuable eBike, I think tracking is worthwhile as another layer of protection.
Options include dedicated GPS/LTE bicycle trackers and compatible Bluetooth tracking devices.
I prefer a tracker that can be hidden inside or securely attached to the bike rather than one that's immediately visible.
Tracking doesn't prevent theft, but it may help locate a stolen bike.
I don't use tracking information to confront a suspected thief myself. If a stolen bike appears at a particular location, I provide that information to law enforcement.
I Record the Bike's Serial Number Before Anything Happens
This is one of the easiest security steps to forget.
Before regularly riding a new eBike, I record:
- Frame serial number
- Make and model
- Color
- Battery serial number, if available
- Motor serial number, if available
- Purchase receipt
- Clear photographs of the bicycle
- Photographs of distinctive marks or accessories
I keep this information somewhere accessible even if the bicycle disappears.
I also register the bicycle with an appropriate local or national bike-registration service when one is available.
These records can make it much easier to file an accurate police report and prove ownership if the bike is recovered.
How I Secure My eBike at Home
A garage isn't automatically secure.
If I'm storing an eBike in a garage, shed, basement, or shared bicycle room, I still lock it.
My preferred setup is:
eBike frame → heavy chain → securely installed ground or wall anchor
I also keep garage doors and windows secured and avoid leaving expensive cycling equipment clearly visible from outside.
For apartment buildings, I am especially cautious with communal bike rooms. Multiple residents and visitors may have access, so I treat them more like public parking than private storage.
Whenever practical, indoor storage inside my home provides the best protection.
How Long Can I Safely Leave an eBike Locked Outside?
There isn't a universally safe amount of time.
The longer an eBike remains unattended, the more opportunity a thief has to study it, return with tools, or attack the locks.
My approach is roughly:

Even excellent locks can eventually be defeated with enough time and suitable tools.
Common eBike Locking Mistakes I Avoid
The mistakes that concern me most are surprisingly simple:
- Locking only the front wheel
- Using a cable lock as the only lock
- Locking to a weak or removable object
- Leaving too much space inside a U-lock
- Leaving the battery and expensive accessories exposed
- Parking in the same vulnerable outdoor location every night
- Assuming CCTV will prevent theft
- Relying entirely on GPS tracking
- Assuming a locked garage means the bike doesn't need to be secured
- Forgetting to record the serial number
My Recommended eBike Anti-Theft Setup
If I wanted a practical security system for a valuable commuter or fat-tire eBike, I would use several layers:
Primary security: High-security U-lock or heavy chain securing the frame to an immovable object.
Secondary security: A second high-quality lock securing another wheel/frame section.
Component security: Remove the battery, display, lights, and other expensive accessories when practical.
Electronic security: Enable any built-in motor immobilizer, alarm, or app-based locking feature.
Tracking: Install a concealed GPS or compatible tracking device.
Recovery preparation: Record the serial number, photograph the bike, keep proof of purchase, and register it where appropriate.
No single one of these measures makes an eBike theft-proof. The advantage comes from using them together.
